BREAKING AWAY FROM TRADITION (Excerpt From The Raw Cure: Healing Beyond Medicine)
“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting the results to be different.” – Albert Einstein
All of the bad habits we have attached to traditional events have caused traditions to regress into contributors of sickness and ill health. The Christmas dinners that are centered on ham, or another piece of dead flesh, are contributing to degenerative disease. The turkey and processed foods on Thanksgiving are doing the same. On holidays such as Valentine’s Day and Halloween, we give out candy that contains mixtures of harmful chemicals and is lacking healthful ingredients. We bake cookies full of clarified sugars, cooked oils, and refined gluten grain flours for the holidays. In the summer, we enjoy frozen popsicles and ice cream that consists of preservatives, dairy, and refined sugars, leading to common illnesses. In winter, we delight ourselves with hot chocolate that is also a mixture of harmful chemicals.
Major food companies have used marketing tactics to turn the common foods we eat on holidays into chemical-laden, processed food look-a-like substances that rob us of our health and induce sickness. Candy is not food and is not safe for human consumption. It is poison in a package. Do you ever notice why so many people get sick around the holidays? It is not “seasonal,” it is because we load up on the worst foods during these holidays.
Late October, going into November, is when the most cases of influenza and the common cold are documented in public schools across the country. Why do you think this is? The reason is that kids are given permission to eat gobs of candy and this is literally poisoning them.
"Halloween is just two weeks away, and most parents are worried about the frightening amount of sugar children consume. That’s understandable. But Halloween is just one day. What really scares me are the meat and dairy products lurking in children’s diets every day and everywhere – from fast food to school lunches. Unfortunately, some parents don’t share this fear. Some parents may not yet realize how healthful a plant-based diet can be for their children.
Meat and dairy products are loaded with fat and cholesterol that lead to childhood obesity, diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. A new study in the British Medical Journal found that obese children as young as five years old were already showing signs of heart disease that could seriously increase their risk of heart attacks and stroke as they get older. Now that gives me nightmares." – Dr. Neal Barnard
In school, candy is passed out as a treat. Some teachers order pizza for kids as a reward for good behavior. This means they are being poisoned as a reward. Then you get the people who say, “Oh let them live, they are just kids.” Well, that is exactly what I want them to do. I want them to live. Unfortunately, the school lunches, pizza days, and candy being handed out play a role in cutting their lives short. Children do not enjoy being sick. If we would simply explain to them that sickness does not come from germs, and instead, we inform them of the truth: that the candy, meat, eggs, dairy, sugar, and fried foods they are being served in school, and are often eating at home, are making them sick, then chances are they would be less likely to indulge in them. There is no reason to be scared of telling your child the truth about bad foods. If you want your child to “live a little,” as so many say, then you should allow them to live with good health and give them real food while educating them on the dangers of the poison they are being served in school.
Another common time for sickness to develop is around Christmas. From the end of October all the way up until mid January, we see the most sickness. This is not because of cold weather, it is because so many eat candy on Halloween, overload on animal protein and processed foods on Thanksgiving, and eat too many cookies and other sweets around Christmas. Then, to top it off, they wash them down with the pus and secretions (cow’s milk) of a six-hundred pound animal that has been enslaved since birth, and fed an unnatural diet that gets them so sick they are treated with drugs.
Another common tradition is hunting. Hunting is not only cruel, but completely unnecessary. The animal farming industry and ranching has killed off the predator animals, which has created an overpopulation of certain other animals, creating an imbalance of both prey and plant life.
“Thanksgiving dinner’s sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner’s dark and blue,
when you stop and try to see it
from the turkey’s point of view.
Sunday dinner isn’t sunny,
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
when you see it from the viewpoint
of a chicken or a duck.
Oh how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobsters, lamb chops too.
‘Til I stopped and looked at dinner,
from the dinner’s point of view.”
– Shel Silverstein
Massive road construction, urban sprawl, drainage of wetlands, damming of rivers, and loss of topsoil from intensive industrial mono-cropping of millions upon millions of acres of land to grow food for billions of farm animals, all points to one thing that is destroying Earth, as well as our civilization – meat eating. I had a friend who responded to a message I had made public about eradicating hunting.
This was his response:
Eradicate hunting? Are you out of your mind? What’s next; hand all of our guns over to the government? Sorry Jesse, but I’m going to have to dislike this one. Being healthy and eating healthy is one thing, but hunting is and will always be an American tradition.”
My friend had a good point, hunting is an American tradition and it is an unnecessary one. You kill an animal, steal its life, and then eat its dead, decayed flesh, develop disease, and after suffering the last few years of your life with cancer or some other degenerative disease linked to meat-eating, you die prematurely.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I am glad he responded the way he did. I don’t look at him as any less of a person. All I did was try my best to educate him on why the hobby is unnecessary.
It has also become American tradition to be obese, develop cancer, develop heart disease, and cut our life expectancy in half. It has become American tradition to drink our lives away with alcohol and smoke our lungs away with cigarettes, while trashing our body systems with garbage foods. It is American tradition to support the fast food industry and other corporations which are major contributors to the destruction of the rainforests, and are largely responsible for the crisis of global warming. It is traditional to eat GMO foods that cause cancer, and then vote no for the laws that would force these GMO companies to label the food products they sell so we are aware of what we are eating.
"Vegetarian food leaves a deep impression on our nature. If the whole world adopts vegetarianism, it can change the destiny of humankind." – Albert Einstein
The point I am making is that American tradition is leading to American suffering. We have to break away from tradition, cleanse ourselves, change our diets, stop considering animals as food, and build our new traditions based on love, good health, prosperity, and protecting wildlife and the environment if we want to see our health progress. This is how we will eradicate sickness.

FISH SYNDROME (Excerpt from The Raw Cure: Healing Beyond Medicine)
I'm not an advocate of eating foods that are high on the food chain. Why eat fish, to get nutrients? Why not eat the foods that fish eat? This is where the fish get their nutrients. There is no reason to filter nutrients through the organs of another species prior to obtaining them. We can eat algae supplements or add kelp powder or dulse flakes to our entrees instead, eliminating the dietary cholesterol contained in fish. There are wonderful varieties of seaweed and algae as well that are edible and are great compliments to many dishes. To name a few: kelp, dulse, nori, spirulina, wakame, and AFA blue-green algae are all good food choices that will provide us with a greater abundance of the nutrients we think we are obtaining from fish. The key to optimal health is to eat as low on the food chain as possible – as in edible plant matter, not animals.
The blue whale eats only phytoplankton. It also happens to be the largest mammal on the planet and remains sexually active until old age –or– the end of its life, nearly two-hundred years later. Similar to how the strongest, leanest, and most muscular land mammals such as cows, elephants, gorillas, and horses eat only plants, so do blue whales. They each eat as low on the food chain as possible. We should follow their lead and eat a plant-based diet. Doing so will nourish and strengthen our bodies.
When fish is cooked, any healthy oils that may be contained within are degraded. This means they are equivalent to trans-fats. These bad oils cause inflammation and lead to all sorts of other health issues. Because the oceans are so polluted from our waste, fish contain heavy metals, industrial pollutants, pharmaceutical drugs, and farming chemical residues. These waste products also impact the wildlife that eat fish. Some animals that eat fish, such as bears, do not eat the fish for protein. They eat the fish for the fat. Only a relatively small part of their diet is meat based. As is typical with carnivores, bears can also tolerate high amounts of cholesterol in their diet without getting heart disease.
Many people continue to believe that eating fish provides us with omega-3 fatty acids, which are critical to brain cell function, and boost levels of DHA and EPA. Many people also think that eating fish prevents cognitive decline and staves off dementia. However, we can maintain adequate amounts of these nutrients from the alpha-linoleic acids (ALA) found in raw plant oils. In a ten-year study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2010, researchers found that the omega-3 long-chain fatty acids found in fish oils did not lower dementia risk. Those who ate fish regularly developed dementia at the same rate as those who did not eat fish. Further research has proven that the most important foods for brain function are not fish or fish oils; they are ALA-rich foods, such as raw flaxseeds, chia seeds, hemp seeds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, and fruits and vegetables. The ALA found in many plant oils has been shown to have direct anti-arrhythmic properties, meaning they help prevent sudden cardiac death. In the Neuropsychopharmacology Journal, researchers reported that ALA actively promotes neuronal plasticity. This stimulates the growth of new nerve cells, and enhances nerve growth factors that protect against depression. This ALA is not obtained from eating fish. We are nourished with ALA from eating raw plants. To maintain happiness and achieve optimal health, our best option is to avoid all food that once had eyes, was born, had a family, and was once a living creature with a soul.
In 2007, the Institute of Medicine compiled the risks and benefits of eating fish. They stated, “The contaminants in fish that are of most concern today are mercury, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dioxins, and pesticide residues. Very high levels of mercury can damage nerves in adults and disrupt development of the brain and nervous system in a fetus or young child. The effect of the far lower levels of mercury currently found in fish have been linked to subtle changes in nervous system development and a possible increased risk of cardiovascular disease.”
While many people accept the belief that eating fish is a healthy choice for losing weight and maintaining health, consider the chemical pollutants found in fish that disrupt our metabolism and may pave the way for obesity. A February 2009 study published in Molecular and Cellular Endocrinology, titled Endocrine Disrupters as Obesogens, suggests that chemical obesogens in the food supply may be contributing to the obesity epidemic. In our body we have preadipocytes (pre-fat cells), which are fibroblasts that can be stimulated to form adipocytes (fat cells). These chemical obesogens were found to stimulate the formation from preadipocyte to adipocyte. Adipocytes – also known as lipocytes or fat cells – are the cells that compose the majority of adipose tissue, and store energy as fat. We are exposed to obesogens by means of our diet, and it was determined that these chemicals are found most abundantly in fish. So, as we continue to eat sea life, we trigger the body to store more energy as fat, and this could cause weight gain.
In addition to fish being a poor food choice, shellfish are also known to contain phycotoxins, which are produced by microalgae. The November 2011 edition of Chemical Research in Toxicology published a study introducing cyclic imines as being a harmful phycotoxin with fast-acting toxicity. These marine biotoxins were shown to be fatal in rodents, and are said to be responsible for the high incidence of shellfish poisoning that occurs worldwide.
As we learn more about the toxins found in fish, and as we educate ourselves further on true nutrition, we begin to realize that eating fish is not necessary for health, or is it essential for a lean frame. We discover that eating seafood is more harmful than it could be beneficial. Once we see it from this perspective, then we can take it up another step and learn how the fishing industry is close to wiping out the entire population of fish in the sea.
In August 2012, the completion of a four year study conducted by an international group of ecologists and economists on 7,800 marine species around the world’s ecosystems concluded that all of the world’s stocks of seafood will collapse by the year 2050. This is due to the present rates of destruction by the fishing industry. Over sixty percent of the fish taken from the sea by this industry are ground up and force-fed to vegetarian livestock in the meat industry so they can be fattened and slaughtered. As Philip Wollen mentions in the St. James Ethics debate, vegetarian cows have now become the largest ocean predators. This is not natural. Access kindnesstrust.com to learn more. Because of factory-farmed pigs now eating fish, the captain of Sea Shepherd now claims pigs are the number one ocean predator.
Each product purchased from the meat industry contributes to the death of marine life. The ocean provides the majority of oxygen on Earth, and if we continue doing what we are doing, all ocean life will soon die. When ocean life dies, life on land will go with it. The solution to this problem is simple: refrain from eating meat and all animal products and the meat industry will collapse. See the book Extinction by John McCabe.

WHY THE PINK RIBBONS? (Excerpt from The Raw Cure: Healing Beyond Medicine)
The American Cancer Society reports that one in eight women risks developing invasive breast cancer at some point in her life. The most recent estimates for breast cancer in the United States in 2012 indicate that there are 226,870 new cases annually and around 39,510 of these cases will result in death. To promote the cancer industry and raise funding so they can continue to mislead us with chemotherapy drugs and radiation treatments, pink ribbons are distributed all over the country. These pink ribbons do nothing to stop the spread of breast cancer, or to find the cure. The truth is that the preventative steps are well known, yet not widely accepted or practiced. To efficiently advance forward with a cure, the cause must first be determined. We know the most common causes.
“While scientists are hard at work searching for specific breast cancer-fighting compounds, the safest approach is to apply what we already know: Diets that are highest in a variety of plant foods while avoiding heavy oils, meat, eggs, and dairy products, help prevent a great many diseases. The earlier in life we start, the better.” – Dr. Neal M. Barnard
After assessing several international and migrant studies, Dr. T. Colin Campbell suggests in his book, The China Study, the possibility that we can lower our rate of breast cancer to almost zero if we make certain lifestyle choices. He learned from these studies that those people who migrated from one area to another, and then began eating the typical diet in their new residency, assumed the disease risk of the area to which they moved. This led to his belief that diet and lifestyle are the principle causes of these diseases. He points to a study conducted by Professor Ken Carroll from the University of Western Ontario in Canada, in which a relationship was shown between the intake of dietary fat and incidence of breast cancer. In this same study, Professor Carroll was able to show that breast cancer was associated with animal fat intake, but not with plant fat. When presented with this study, the cancer industry quickly overlooked his findings, and continued putting money towards developing new drugs that fail to prevent, reverse, or cure the disease. The study was published in Cancer Journal in 1986, and titled, “Fat and Cancer.”
Those who were convinced that this increased intake of dietary fats is indeed linked to breast cancer began to lower their intake of fats, yet they did this by eating low-fat or nonfat animal products, rather than converting to plant-based diets. So, as the percentage of calories from fat began to decrease, the percentage of calories obtained from animal proteins increased. This could explain why we still have not largely eradicated this disease.
“Diet and disease factors such as animal protein consumption or breast cancer incidence lead to changes in the concentrations of certain chemicals in our blood. These chemicals are called biomarkers. As an example, blood cholesterol is a biomarker for heart disease. We measured six blood biomarkers that are associated with animal protein intake. Do they confirm the finding that animal protein intake is associated with cancer in families? Absolutely. Every single animal protein-related blood biomarker is significantly associated with the amount of cancer in a family.” – Dr. T.Colin Campbell, The China Study
As I mentioned in chapter seven, the parabens that are added to beauty products trigger the development of breast cancer. The lifestyle choices we make also trigger breast cancer. The food choices we make play a role in the development of this disease as well. Prevention is the safest and most effective method for reducing your chances of being one in eight women who will be afflicted with this cancer. Prevention begins with abiding by a clean, plant-based diet. This means removing all animal products, processed foods, fast food, and food chemicals from the diet. Of all foods, dairy is the most detrimental. Several studies have concluded that the protein in milk, casein, is directly linked to breast cancer incidence. Of these studies, The China Study is the most comprehensive and up-to-date. If you have not done so already, I encourage you to read the book, and see the documentary, Forks Over Knives. In addition to diet, it is important to avoid all chemicals in general. To do this one must refrain from using beauty products that are not organic, and that contain parabens or sulfates. Chemicals are absorbed through the skin and into the lymph fluid. If you enjoy cleaning, and use chemical cleaning supplies, it is also important that you replace your usual chemical cleaners with plant-based, chemical free cleaners, or simply use vinegar. Cigarette smoking, drinking alcohol, and using suntan lotions must also be eliminated.
What I find most appalling about the pink ribbon scam is that many of the retail stores, as well as fast food restaurants, that are accepting donations for pink ribbons, are selling the very same products containing substances known to increase the incidence of breast cancer, yet they still expect us to donate money to their cause. I find this to be backwards, disgraceful, immoral, and wrong.
“Some dairy products, such as whole milk and many types of cheese, have a relatively high saturated fat content, which may increase risk. Moreover, milk products may contain contaminants such as pesticides, which have carcinogenic potential, and growth factors such as insulin-like growth factor I, which have been shown to promote breast cancer cell growth.” – The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition
A study published in Mutagenesis Journal in 2009, titled, Dietary Intake of Meat and Meat-Derived Heterocyclic Aromatic Amines and Their Correlation with DNA Adducts in Female Breast Tissue, showed that heterocyclic amines not only trigger cancer and promote tumor growth, but that they also increase its metastatic potential by increasing its invasiveness. These cooked meat carcinogens are found mostly in bacon, fish, beef, and chicken, but are present in nearly all animal-based foods once heat is applied. Of the heterocyclic amines, PhIP is perhaps the most damaging to health. The study found that PhIP initiates tumor growth, promotes cancer due to its estrogenic activity, and promotes the invasiveness of breast cancer cells more than straight estrogen. This is alarming, especially knowing how common it is for women with breast cancer to continue eating animal products, and that the most frequent cause of death in patients with breast cancer is from the metastasis of cells from the primary tumor, to distant sites, such as the liver and lungs, where they can grow to form secondary tumors.
In a study conducted at Harvard Medical School, ninety thousand women were monitored from 1991 through 2003. The women completed regular questionnaires to record how often they consumed more than 130 different foods and drinks so researchers could determine a possible link between diet and cancer. The women were asked to report whether or not they had developed breast cancer bi-annually. Only women who were premenopausal with no previous cancers were included in the study. At the end of the study it was determined that women who ate a high-meat diet were found to be much more prone to developing hormonally reactive breast cancers. Women who ate more than one-and-a-half servings of red meat such as lamb, beef, or pork daily had almost double the risk of hormone receptor-positive breast cancer compared with those who ate three or fewer servings per week. The study was published in November 2006 in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
In the Harvard Nurses’ Health Study, which included 120,000 women from all over the country and investigated the relationship between diet, lifestyle, and disease in women, it was determined after two decades that breast cancer risk increases by twenty-two percent with every 100g per day increment of egg consumption. This is equivalent to about two eggs per day. PhIP has also been traced in the urine of vegetarians who eat eggs, making eggs an even less desirable choice for those afflicted with this cancer.
In the same study, alcohol consumption was found to increase breast cancer incidence by forty-one percent for women consuming thirty to sixty grams of alcohol per day, when compared with women who choose not to drink.
“I performed multiple regression analysis on breast cancer incidence. The highest correlation with breast cancer incidence was from animal source calories as compared to plant source calories. The saturated fat in meat and milk products increases the risk of breast cancer.” – Dr. William Harris, author of Cancer and Vegan Diet
In his book, Super Immunity, Dr. Joel Fuhrman presents us with a list of foods he believes to have the most powerful immune-boosting and anti-cancer effects. He provides an acronym for these foods, being G-BOMBS. These are: Greens, Beans, Onions, Mushrooms, Berries, and Seeds. He claims these foods help to prevent the cancerous transformation of normal cells, and keep the body armed and ready to attack any pre-cancerous or cancerous cells that may arise. In one of his articles titled, Fight Breast Cancer with G-BOMBS, published October 8th, 2012, on diseaseproof.com, Dr. Fuhrman explains why he recommends these particular foods. He specifically mentions cruciferous vegetables as being associated with decreased risk of breast cancer, and increased chances of survival in women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. He was inclined to include beans because they are high in fiber, and according to a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition in 2011, high fiber diets are found to reduce the risk of breast cancer. If you are going to include beans in your diet, learn to use a steamer basket or bamboo basket, or try a double boiler so the beans boil in the water but do not touch the hot bottom of the pan. Also be sure to add plenty of raw vegetables to your dish. Because onions contain organosulfur compounds, they can be effective in slowing tumor growth and killing cancer cells. Mushrooms contain compounds known as aromatase inhibitors, which can block the production of estrogen. In a Chinese study published in the International Journal of Cancer in 2009, it was determined that women who ate at least ten grams of mushrooms per day had a sixty-four percent decreased risk of developing breast cancer. This is equivalent to a button mushroom per day. Berries also contain aromatase inhibitors, as well as many antioxidants, which protect against DNA damage that could lead to cancer, and reduce inflammation. Some seeds, especially sesame and flaxseeds, are rich in lignans. These are plant estrogens that protect against breast cancer. A study published in the Clinical Cancer Research Journal in 2005 found that women who were diagnosed with breast cancer, and were given flaxseeds daily, had reduced growth and increased death of their tumor cells after only five weeks.
In June 2005, a study conducted by researchers in Italy was published in the Journal of Nutrition. The research team found that when they mixed raw cauliflower juice with breast cancer cells, not only did the cancerous cells stop growing, but when they were exposed to higher doses of the juice, the cells died. Normal cells however, were not impacted. The compounds in cauliflower juice that are responsible for killing these cancerous cells are known as isothiocyanates (ITC). ITCs are anti-cancer compounds formed when compounds called phytoalexins, or glucosinolates, which act as the defense system for the genus of plants known as brassica, are modified after being chewed, or blended. These brassica plants are also categorized as cruciferous vegetables. When we chew these plants, they produce an enzyme known as myrosinase, which converts the glucosinolates into ITCs. The ITC compounds then stimulate the liver to excrete the carcinogenic compounds that may be circulating in the body. This does not mean you can simply drink cauliflower juice and expect breast cancer to go away. This means that if you cleanse internally, avoid foods that nurture cancer cells, and incorporate the juices from cruciferous vegetables into your diet you will have a greater chance of reversing the condition – and preventing its recurrence.
Cruciferous Vegetables: Arugula, broccoli, broccoli greens, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens, kale, mustard greens, radishes, turnip greens, watercress.
“The scientific evidence shows that women do have the power to protect themselves against breast cancer with powerful preventive lifestyle measures. Staying slim and active, focusing on healthful natural foods, and avoiding the disease-causing foods of the Standard American diet are strategies women can use to win the war on breast cancer.” – Dr. Joel Fuhrman
If breast cancer has already developed and you happen to be living with this disease, this does not mean you will die. This also does not mean you will need to have a mastectomy. You will not need to go through unnecessary chemotherapy and radiation treatments. This means you must begin to cleanse internally, incorporate juicing into your daily routine, exercise, and change your diet and approach to life. Internal cleansing services such as the lymphatic drainage, oxygen bath, and colon hydrotherapy have all proven to be helpful in combating this disease. The lymphatic system operates by moving lymph fluids through connective tissues, and this can only be done through the movement of tissues. Because of this, as Ron Garner mentions in Conscious Health, “Women should not always have their breasts bound tightly with bras. They should exercise daily wearing loose apparel that allows the breasts to move. The restriction of movement causes a constriction of fluids and obstructs lymphatic circulation. This long term restriction of the lymphatic drainage system in breasts blocks natural energy flow and can be a factor in the development of breast cancer.” If you wear bras often, fail to incorporate exercise into your daily routine, and partake in activities that can cause the lymph fluid to stagnate, such as smoking, consuming dairy products, eating meat or eggs, and wearing cosmetics and anti-perspirants containing harmful chemicals, then going in for a lymphatic drainage would be a good idea. Beginning to exercise regularly, and remembering to wear loose clothing while doing so, will also get the lymph fluids moving again.
By eating the foods which Dr. Fuhrman recommends, eating cruciferous vegetables from the brassica family, drinking fresh organic juices, avoiding all animal-based foods, cleansing internally, getting exposure to sunlight, using plant-based cleaners, steering clear of cosmetics loaded with sulfates and parabens, exercising, and making healthy lifestyle choices, one diagnosed with breast cancer would be making wise choices in alignment with healing and prevention.
